This dumb bird tried to commit suicide. I would pull forward and it would run and stop in front of us. I finally had Sara get out to distract it while I drove down the driveway and it started pecking at her. She made it back into the truck and it jumped on the hood! Ella was determined to go the the park even though it was 2 in the afternoon and the heat was soaring...Sara noticed right away that there was water at the bottom of one of the slides but Ella didn't hear her and splashed into it. I wish I had the camera out for that moment.....she froze in shock. Then the poor girl was horribly embarrassed but no one was crazy enough to be there with us so I couldn't firgure out why. It dried out within 20 minutes but Sara and I still thought it was kinda funny.

We opened her gifts a day early because Tanner was heading to Scout camp on her birthday. She was thrilled. It has become her birthWEEK instead of just her birthDAY.

Ella turned 7 this week. Unbelievable....

Sara wrapped the presents for me and she did an awesome job. This package of gum had nearly 20 layers on it and took Ella about 5 minutes to open.

She thought she was getting close....

She was extremely happy with her map of Paris.

The next morning she even woke up early to play her new DS game.

After we burnt a bag of popcorn we threw it out on the back porch. The next morning when I went to retrieve it I saw our family of chipmunks and a lizard back there so I got the idea to dump it out and give all the critters a treat. I had no idea how much fun it would end up being but we witnessed chipmunks 3 & 4 at a time and large lizards.

As were driving home from a movie with Grandma the other night. We drove past the temple and decided to stop. It was a beautiful night because the clouds had cooled it down. We took a walk around the entire building. On the back were some janitors who pointed out a bee hive and we looked at locusts shells. Then he offered us some fresh figs he had just picked. They were yummy.

Ella did not enjoy the adventure like Sara did. She was thoroughly pestered by the gnats. She thought the crawdads were ugly and gross. She didn't want to fish for them. She was upset about the campfire smoke and was disgusted that someone would even consider eating them. But it was fun for the rest of us.

We went to Zion the 1st weekend of July. It was hot. Good thing for us we could play in the water. The hiked the easy ones. The Riverwalk and the Weeping Rock. We packed a picnic and ate it right outside the park too. Good day. Beautiful place.

We spent the last Monday of June exploring the beach. There is always something new to see.

This year we saw a huge crab, a baby seagull and a dead, washed up seal. Something I've never seen on the beach there in 20+ years.

Ella is terrified of seaweed and since there was a abundance of it she was shy of the water. Of course until it was time to go.

It is amazingly beautiful here. The kids love the mix of rocky shore and beach. The tide pools were swarming with activity.

Sara made good use of grandpa's boogie board. Ella also does not like sand sticking to her so she used hers as a place to sit.

Sara chased the birds away.

Tanner found this huge seaweed.

For some reason, after a few hours, the seaweed didn't seem so scary and Ella carried around a long string of it and "went fishing".

San Diego's New Children's Museum

A 3 story trojan horse greets you as you walk in. They have scheduled story times inside.

The chariots took a lot of our time. They were pretty cool.

Grandpa chilled in the chair while the kids made birdhouses, blew bubbles and made bugs out of clay.

the birdhouses were made out of cardboard, covered in newspaper and secured with colored masking tape.

Tanner painted the "whale". The color of the day was orange.

There was a climbing wall about 12 feet high so the kids decided to move from side to side.

Grandpa got busy bustin' some Ka-rot-T on his grandkids.

Ella sculptured a snail and Sara made a beetle out of clay. They didn't make it home though.

They finished the day with the chariots.

For dinner that night we went to an old La Jolla favorite. Alfonso's. The kids tried Virgin strawberry Magaritas and Ella spilled hers after the first sip. She was already shivering from being cold so we bundled her up in Tanners sweatshirt.
Then we headed for the cove.

The reptile house was almost empty so we took our time.

One of the coolest new things we found was in the kids petting zoo area. It was an insect display with ton of cool bugs.

Tanner ran he into an exchange student he knows from school visiting the zoo with her family before she heads home to Brazil.

We did the bus tour. It was a fun ride and gave us a view of lots of the animals quickly.

5th Grade Graduation

Today Sara got her 5th grade promotion.

She also got an award for high achievement in reading and math CRT scores

Mrs. Jenkins called her Goodman.

She also got her D.A.R.E. certificate pledging to never abuse drugs & alcohol.

Sara has some amazing friends. These 3 are all missing the same tooth.

Aria, Sara, Eden, Shelbi, Sierra and (the short one in front is) Kessa.

These girls have grown so much. I remember pre-school. (ooops-mom moment. i just can't believe how much they've grown!)

Mrs. Wilson made a very positive impact on Ella this year. She taught her everything a 1st grader should know while also teaching her good citizen skills. I am so impressed with the effort that she puts into teaching. We are so lucky to have been in her class. (I say we because I helped in class every week.)
They each earned badges for their banners. Ella got Super Star Speller, Fast Math, Straight A's Blooming Author, Book Worm, Citizenship, A.R. 50 point reading Club and the DAZZLER AWARD (for amazing spelling skills-this year Ella passed off the 1st grade words during the 2nd trimester. She went on to spell the 2nd and 3rd grade words and then finally we just asked her what words she wanted to learn. She passed off all the U.S. states and capitols and her last set of words had crossiant and persuade).

Cookies for the Queen

Ella's teacher, Mrs. Wilson, had a birthday this week. She requested our sugar cookies and so Ella and I made a batch for her. Another mom gave her a crown and a sash dubbing her Queen for a day and so all the kids in the class called her Queen Wilson.

Ella won 2nd place over-all at this years Fair for her super-duper-fabulous Peanut Butter Bars.
So her teacher invited her to do a demonstration in class.
She did so awesome.
We wrote out step by step instructions and had all the ingredients pre-measured and ready to go.
Then she shared a her pre-made samples with the class.

I'll end it here and spare you the punishment for lying....and for using a razor. But it took a LOT of will-power to not crack up at her super smooth and shiny leg. Really? What was she thinking? 6! She's only 6! Crazy girl.

Valley of Fire hike

Spring Break we headed to Valley of Fire for a day of hiking and local education. Mouse's Tank is awesome if you ever head over there yourself.
We went with the Hills and the Jacksons. With only two vehicles we looked like clown cars.

Ella, among lots of other things she does not enjoy, is not a hiker. It was too hot. (80's) And too sandy. (desert)

We didn't really almost die. But I scared the kids pretty good taking these turns. Ella and Keaton in the backseat just had there hands up yelling "weeeee".

Spring Music Show

Ella (front row, far left) had a 1st grade music program. It was adorable.

There class had the "don't feed dogs chocolate" song and all the kids took a turn barking like a dog. I wasn't listening very well but I'm quite certain that the words included dogs will puke if you give it to them...... ??????

Her class had to wear purple. She had nothing purple so I took her shopping. We found this sweater. Size 12. It worked great as a tunic.

The kids, for some odd reason, remember that I ask to take "silly faces" pictures and now pose for them first when I ask them all to get together.

The building was "The Wizard of Oz" theme. So amazing.

Sara entered the Quiz Bowl. They were matched against the HS FFA team.

Randy was chosen for the Junior Judging.

It is possible to be more nervous as a parent than a participant.

But I shouldn't have worried. Randy placed 4th.

She won 1st in her division for the Junior Judging! Wow! $30!

Another first was the shearing competition.

This about killed me. Sara and Jesse were so calm......

They survived and so did Taboo.

What we've been up to

Sara made us all proud at the fair and recieved 5 awards this year along with her 4-H group.

Our club got the Herdsman award-which means all-round best club. Yeah!

She won 4th in her class and 3rd in showmanship.

Randy loves her so much.

As you may know this is a "kill only" show. So poor Randy was to be put to his death and butchered for some "lucky" buyer to bar-b-que. Fortunetly for Randy, Sara fell in love and chose a goat over a new puppy. I know, right??? But having a goat for a pet is not bad. Not bad at all. I won't EVER feel guilty for not letting him in the house. Bonus. I don't have to pick up massive terds left in the dirt and grass. Huge Bonus. And he "maaaahhhs" much quieter than a dog. The way I see it, goats make better pets than dogs. So I was sold. And so was Randy; right back to us.

The day started with a few chores and then we colored some eggs. Okay. LOTS of eggs.
Next, we had a very adventurous Easter hunt. This is the tradition for finding the baskets. The Easter Bunny left us garden plants. So we spent the next few hours of the day planting a garden while Randy watched, then rewarded ourselves with dinner at Samurai 21. Yum!

It was so nice to finally have kids old enough to babysit so we had some fun MOM time alone in Las Vegas for the day then came home and watched a movie with the kids.

For Christmas gifts to the girls good friends, we took them ice skating. They loved it. And they were all such good skaters.

Ella held on to the wall for a full hour before she would let go. But when she did she loved it.

Good story about Ella, Sara and Santa Claus. We were heading to the party and I told Ella we didn't want to be late or we might miss seeing Santa at the party. She said, "That's okay, Mom, because it's not a real Santa anyway." This child has my head spinning when Sara says, "It's not?" After the party Ella told me he was a pretty good Santa and she thought that it was "cool" that he stayed and had dinner with all of us.

There it is.

This year we went and cut down our own tree. It was a little parallel to one of our favorite movies. The tree that now stands in our house is indeed too tall and full of sap. But we love it. Finished pictures of that coming soon.

When the search was over the kids got out and enjoyed the snow. It was a fairly warm day but the snow was nearly a foot deep.

I really should clarify that they did not have a snowball fight. It was a snow chunk fight. Big huge top pieces of snow that were thrown like a frisbee.

I said they could wear the hat OR the earmuffs. They choose to wear both.

We gave Grandma a pedicure for her birthday.

Ella did not eat any traditional Thanksgiving food.

11 is the age you are invited to Hogwarts.
So it was a perfect time to have a Harry Potter party.
Last minute we changed our plans from going to see the new one
and ended up watching the 6th movie at home.
We had a huge popcorn bar and other fun treats.

We gave every girl a wand and all it's details from Ollivanders with their invitation.
THEY LOVED IT.
A few girls printed out spells and brought them to the party.
And they quizzed each other on Harry Potter facts.

There was leftover nacho cheese from the consession stand Saturday. So I took home a tub of it and transformed it into yummy fondue.

If I were to dress up this year I would've been Professor McGonagall.
We will be wearing this to the Harry Potter movie on the 19th.....We are so excited.

Ella's Halloween Party

Ella wanted a Halloween Party. Her and her buddy Addison planned one together and we did it at the park. We had snacks, painted fingernails, played games and had a pinata. It was a beautiful evening minus a slight a breeze.

The pinata was nothing to write home about. I could not find a Halloween pinata after looking at 7 stores....so I made one. Notice I was not proud enough of it to share any photos. But there were no complaints from the kids.

The girls loved painting each others nails.

About an hour into the party a mystery guest arrived. We spent a few minutes guessing who it was....

Little Shop Of Horses

Last night we went to see the high school production of Little Shop Of Horrors.

After the show Ella said, "I kept waiting for the horse because I thought it was called Little Shop of Horse".

I wish I could've videoed her when she noticed the plant moving.

Ella went to a tea party and came home with all this loot. She looked adorable and had fun making the accessories.

Ella played awesome this year. She was so excited to get her first trophy.

Sara did so great too. She has a fun team and they worked so well together. I was impressed that none of the girls were "ball hogs" and payed attention to who to pass it to for the benefit of the team. Plus, the weather cooperated fairly well this year.

From here we drove straight home without stopping. That is a stellar accomplishment for 3 girls who drank lots of fluid. We listened to the Beatles #1 hits and that got Ella singing. Of course she changed the words, but I kinda liked, "We all live in a submarine that's yellow".

Witch Festival

Gardners' Village Witch Festival

We finally made it to the Witch Festival.

The girls had fun finding all the witchs in the scavenger hunt.

We can't wait to do it again next year.
